General Information for entering Hungary
Hungary joined the Schengen Area on 21 December, 2007. From that time visas and residence permits issued by one of the Schengen Member States are valid also for Hungary, and visas/residence permits issued by Hungarian authorities are - as a general rule - also valid for the entire Schengen Area.
As of December 19th 2011, 26 states are part of the Schengen Area: 22 states of the 28 members of the European Union (Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Sweden) as well as Norway, Iceland, Switzerland and Lichtenstein. (For the time being 6 member states of the European Union, i.e. Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Ireland, Romania and the United Kingdom do not issue Schengen visas.)
The Schengen regulations are only applicable for a stay not exceeding 90 days. Rules for a stay longer than 90 days are laid down by the national law of the member states concerned.

Working Holiday vízum
General Information
On 1 December 2016 representatives of the Government of Hungary and the Government of the Hong Kong S.A.R. have signed an Agreement on the operation of the Working Holiday Scheme between the Parties. The program is set to start on 1 July 2018.
Purpose of the Working Holiday Scheme (WHS)
The purpose of the WHS is to enhance cultural and people-to-people contacts between Hungary and Hong Kong in order to promote friendship and mutual understanding.
What are the eligibility criteria for the Working Holiday Visa applicant?
The applicant:
(a) must hold a HKSAR passport or a British National (Overseas) passport valid for at least the intended period of stay;
(b) has the primary intention to enjoy a holiday in Hungary, with employment or study being an incidental rather than a primary reason for the visit and will depart Hungary at the end of the visit;
(c) is aged between eighteen (have already had the 18th birthday) and thirty years (have not had the 30th birthday, yet) at the time of application;
(d) is not accompanied by dependants;
(e) has an airplane ticket (incl. return ticket, or sufficient funds to purchase such ticket; destination has to be Hungary);
(f) has 25 000 HKD or equivalent EUR/USD for his/her maintenance during the period of stay in Hungary, at the discretion of the relevant authorities;
(g) pays the prescribed temporary residence permit application fee 60 EUR;
(h) has valid medical and comprehensive hospitalization insurance throughout his/her stay in
Hungary; It is obligatory only after arriving in Hungary;
(i) do not have a criminal record
(j) has not participated in the Scheme before.
Term of validity of the Working Holiday visa
The WHS visa issued by the Hungarian Consulate General in Hong Kong will be valid for 90 days within a period of 365 days with multiple entries.
Participants in the Scheme should not work for the same employer for more than 6 months and cannot engage in permanent employment.
Participants in the Scheme may enroll in one training or study course not exceeding a total of six (6) months duration during the course of their visit to Hungary.
Number of participants per year
Up to two hundred (200) per annum of the temporary residence permits may be issued to
Hong Kong SAR applicants.
Any citizen of the Hong Kong SAR who is granted the Working Holiday Visa has the right:
(a) to stay in Hungary;
(b) to undertake paid employment pursuant to the terms of this Arrangement for a period of
not more than twelve (12) months from the date of entry into Hungary;
(c) to enrol in one training and/or study course pursuant to the terms of this Arrangement; and
(d) to enter and exit Hungary during the period of validity of the temporary residence permit.
Processing of the Working Holiday Visa:
The processing time is not more than 21 days if the applicant fulfils all eligibility criteria.
The WHS visa issued by the Hungarian Consulate General in Hong Kong will be valid for 90 days within a period of 365 days with multiple entries.
After arriving in Hungary the WHS visa has to be exchanged for a residence permit at the Office of Immigration and Nationality. For the application a permanent address and a comprehensive insurance will be mandatory.

Please apply for the Working Holiday Visa at the Hungarian Consulate General in Hong Kong after 01 July, 2017; call our office at 2878-7555 to make an appointment first and bring the following:
-passport + copy of data page of the passport
-ID photos (attached to the application form)
-airplane ticket (incl. return ticket, or sufficient funds to purchase such ticket; destination has to be Hungary);
-bank statement (having at least 25.000HKD or equivalent EUR/USD on it)
-evidence of appropriate insurance
-proof of accommodation in Hungary
-if you already know where you would visit/work/study, bring the corresponding papers; if not, no need
- application fee 60 EUR in cash
-Applicants will also have a personal interview with our Consul. Please be aware that in order to get the Working Holiday Visa you must possess (at least) basic English or Hungarian skills.
Short term visas
Please note that holders of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macau Special Administrative Region and BN(O) passport holders do not need a visa to visit the Schengen-area as a tourist for up to 90 days every six-month period, provided that no employment is taken. The travel document shall have been issued within the previous 10 years and the validity of the travel document shall last until at least three months after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Member States
What is the Schengen Zone?
It is an area with internal freedom of movement in Europe, comprised by 28 countries, including Hungary. If you intend to travel to European countries, it is likely that you need to enter the Schengen Zone.
What is a short stay in the Schengen Zone?
A short stay is one not exceeding 90 days. A short stay is possible if you are a citizen of a country that is visa-free or if you have applied for and received a visa.
If you wish to stay in Hungary or another Schengen Zone country for longer, you will need a residence permit.
How long can I stay in the Schengen Area?
You are free to visit all these countries during your stay, which shall not exceed 90 days in any given 180-day period. If you have visited Europe recently, you can consult this calculator to see how long you can stay in the Schengen Area on your next trip.

Who needs a residence permit?

Third step is an in-person visit at the Consulate of Hungary after booking appointment.
Long term visa application is assessed and decided on by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing. You must appear in person at our Consulate , as your biometrics (photo and fingerprints) will be taken on site.
If you are Hong Kong SAR passport holder or the citizen of another visa-exempt country, you can apply in Hungary directly at the Directorate-General for Aliens Policing upon your arrival.
How much is the fee of the residence permit application?
954 HKD, payable on-site by bank card. Please note that only card payment is accepted. We hereby inform you that our terminal cannot process prepaid cards. No cash will be accepted at our Consulate. We cannot accept any applications by Applicants who are not able to settle the fees by card on site. Such Applicants have to reschedule their appointments when they are able to comply with the payment method.
How do I get my residence permit?
You will be notified about the decision by the Consulate. Please be advised that during the time of the assessment, the Consulate will not answer any form of enquiry regarding the status or outcome of the procedure. If your application is approved, you will have to collect the residence permit (card) itself in Hungary. We will affix a "type D" visa in your passport which is necessary for you to enter Hungary (and the Schengen area).
When lodging the application, you are expected to:
- Fill in your application correctly and upload all necessary documents.
- Electronically book appointment
- Present and hand over your paper application form duly filled and signed. Application form is free and can be downloaded from here after choosing your residence type at "Residence in Hungary" chapter. The the most common residence types are study and employment.
- Present a passport with a validity of at least 3 months after the intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen States or, in the case of several visits, after the last intended date of departure from the territory of the Schengen states.
- Have a passport that has been issued within the previous 10 years and that has two blank pages next to each other.
- Present 2 passport-size photos not older than 6 months. Please note that the photo has to be color one; head-dress is permitted provided that all facial details are clearly visible.
- Pay the residence permit handling fee.
- Provide all your supporting documents in paper that was previously uploaded.
Formal requirements and other important information:
- Do not staple any papers together
- Do not print any documents double sided
- Complete all applicable questions on the form, do not omit any compulsory information
- Sign the form at all designated places
- Provide a complete set of supporting documents (meaning all compulsory documents listed by the authority based on your type of application http://www.bmbah.hu/index.php?lang=en)
- Mother's name on the form refers to maiden name (name at birth)
- Glue one of the photos on the form in the designated box

The call for applications of The Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA) for its Future Leaders Program for young researchers and recent graduates in international relations
The Hungarian Institute of International Affairs (HIIA) is launching a call for applications for its Future Leaders Program for young researchers and recent graduates in international relations, from Hungary and abroad.
The fellowship, which is conducted in English, will run from October 1, 2024, through January 31, 2025 (in person through late December and online in the final month).
Purpose of the HIIA Future Leaders Program
The HIIA Future Leaders Program aims to provide an opportunity for young researchers and recent graduates interested in foreign policy to get involved in the work of HIIA and to deepen their knowledge of the various fields of Hungarian foreign policy. During the program, fellows will carry out research under professional mentorship and participate in the work of our research groups. Through their own research fields (regional or thematic), fellows will engage with and contribute to the analysis of HIIA’s areas of strategic priority. HIIA will provide fellows with an extensive educational and professional training—including seminars on foreign policy as well as on leadership skills, public speaking and media training—and also opportunities to publish, to participate in public professional discussions and to get to know Hungarian foreign policy circles.

Recent graduates (minimum: bachelor’s degree) with an interest in foreign policy (history, international studies, etc.) and early career international relations analysts under the age of 30.

General conditions
The program consists of two consecutive phases. The first phase, running from October 1, 2024 to December 20, 2024 requires intensive (approx. 30 hours/week) personal presence (at HIIA HQ: 1062 Budapest, Bajza utca 44.). The second phase, running between December 21, 2024 and January 31, 2025 will be held online.
The language of the program is English.
HIIA does not provide work equipment.
HIIA will engage fellows of the Future Leaders Program in a four-month, fixed-term contract with a gross amount of HUF 1 400 000 (appr. 3600 EUR) that will disburse upon the achievement of particular milestones. These will include participation in educational and professional development seminars, as well as the production of research reports for HIIA and a personal research project.
Special provisions for fellows from abroad:
HIIA provides additional funding for international fellows that do not have a residence in Hungary:
- round-trip travel provided by HIIA,
- gross 450 000 HUF (approx. 1160 EUR) for accommodation costs
Before applying to the program, please check the visa requirements, as international fellows are responsible for obtaining the necessary visa for the participation in the program. HIIA is ready to provide assistance with obtaining the visa.
