József Terék, the renowned Hungarian tárogató player, will visit Hong Kong and Macao between 29th October and 1st November. Terék is one of the most prominent players of tárogató, an ancient Hungarian instrument dating back over 500 years that symbolises Hungarian spirit and heritage. In fact, tárogató is so unique that there are only a little over a hundred of these instruments left thus making them extremely valuable. It is passed down from generation to generation and can only be passed on when the previous owner dies. Little wonder that in 2014 it was awarded the title: Hungarikum, an object which symbolises strong national values and promote a positive picture of the country.

For his outstanding efforts of promoting, researching and preserving Hungarian musical cultural heritage, Terék has been granted the Hungarian Golden cross of Merit.  During his concert series, called Tárogató Hungaricum, Terék performs a wide array of music: Hungarian codexes from the 16th to 17th century, Rakoczi melodies from the 17th century, verbunk dances from the 19th century, Hungarian Melodies, Romani music of the 20th century, original works, virtuoso pieces, several pieces from Bartok’s folk collection, and Pista Danko’s pieces as well as beautiful folk pieces from Tapio, Galga, Transylvania, and the highlands. Besides his performances in Hong Kong and Macao, Terék will hold workshops at several musical institutions and universities across the region.
